Turning Natural, A Proudly Owned Black Business

Even with the many different movements happening throughout society today, black people are still constantly dealing with many different forms of racism. For this reason, it is expected for a community to stand together.  In general, experts are quick to advise people about what it means to be successful when it comes to owning a black business. Unfortunately, because an owner is black, certain precautions must be taken into account.
A great example of this comes from the DC, Maryland and Virginia area. Ms. Jerri Evans was born in Southeast DC, a heavily crime ridden area of DC. Years later the place she once called home grew and expanded through gentrification. While some may believe that the community was enhanced, many of the people noticed the way it had begun to strategically remove people from the area. Apartments that once cost no more than $800.00 to live in skyrocketed. When people could no longer afford the cost of living they were forced to move. Ms. Evans decided she wanted to change that. She opened her business, Turning Natural, after the death of her mother in 2005. Turning Natural focuses on enhancing the way of life through natural substances. The vegan café offers juices, smoothies, and other general food items. In the midst of the gentrified Southeast, Turning Natural is a black owned business and while it has grown, Ms. Evans still has to be careful in the way she publicizes. When people walk in, they constantly asked where the manager is, completely unaware that they were looking at her. Whether or not they would admit it, people were genuinely surprised to see a business so successful that was owned by a black woman. As the world continues to advance, so do the people in it. With that being said, in order for change to happen those same people must be open to change. While we see this happening more and more as time progresses, it is still never a bad idea to support your own.
